Laryngectomy (Voice Box Surgery)

Introduction

Surgeons perform a laryngectomy to remove the larynx or voice box due to laryngeal cancer or other serious injuries. This procedure renders a patient incapable of speaking but often becomes necessary to save one’s life. Post-surgery, patients can opt for rehabilitation to recover communication skills and live life without a natural voice.

In this article, we will explore the types, procedure steps, benefits, costs, and risks of Laryngectomy. We’ll also compare costs across countries and highlight the best hospitals in India, especially in Delhi, for Laryngectomy surgery.

What is Laryngectomy?

A laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx, an organ in the throat, which is in charge of voice production, breathing, and swallowing. This is usually performed when a patient has laryngeal cancer or other severe conditions affecting the larynx. The surgery can be either partial or total depending on the severity of the disease or damage. After this, a tracheostomy is done to create an entirely new airway for the patient.

Why is Laryngectomy Needed?

A laryngectomy is usually performed when cancer or other serious conditions damage the voice box. The most common reason for this surgery is laryngeal cancer, which may make it impossible for the larynx to function correctly. It may also be performed in cases of trauma, infection, or other life-threatening diseases affecting the throat. The main goal of the procedure is to save the patient’s life by eliminating cancerous tissues or addressing critical injuries.

Types of Laryngectomy

There are primarily two types of laryngectomy:

  • Partial Laryngectomy: This is the process in which some part of the larynx is removed without damaging the remaining parts. This is generally carried out when cancer is limited to a particular section of the larynx.
  • Total Laryngectomy: In a total laryngectomy, the whole larynx is completely removed and only has a constant stoma which is a hole in the neck to breathe through. This is usually the case where the cancer has spread so extensively or when the larynx cannot be salvaged.

Procedure Steps

  • Preparation: Before the surgery, the patient undergoes thorough tests, including imaging studies and lab work, to assess their overall health. The doctor will discuss the best approach (partial or total) based on the cancer’s location and severity.
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia is administered, ensuring the patient is asleep and pain-free during the surgery.
  • Surgical Removal: The surgeon carefully removes the larynx or affected portion of it. In the case of total laryngectomy, a tracheostomy is created for breathing.
  • Reconstruction: If necessary, the surgeon may perform reconstructive procedures to restore the patient’s ability to speak and swallow, including creating a prosthetic voice box.
  • Post-operative Care: The medical team monitored the patient in the ICU following the surgery; they applied speech and physical rehabilitation to accommodate alterations in the function of speech and swallowing after surgery.

Benefits of Laryngectomy

This surgery for patients with laryngeal cancer offers some saving and healthy effects:

  • Removing cancer: medical professionals offer patients with laryngeal cancers the chance to have complete cancerous tissue removed, ensuring it does not metastasize in the future.
  • Quality of Life Improved: They will find it easier to breathe if a disease or injury blocks their airway.
  • Speech Restoration: Even though one cannot talk in a normal manner, individuals can start to communicate by using a voice prosthesis or even by practicing esophageal speech, provided that they pursue some sort of therapy.

Cost of Laryngectomy (Voice Box Surgery)

The following are the costs of Laryngectomy surgery in different countries.

  • India: $5,000 to $7,500
  • United States: $15,000 to $30,000
  • United Kingdom: $12,000 to $20,000
  • Germany: $10,000 to $18,000
  • Thailand: $6,000 to $8,000

We can see that the cost of Laryngectomy in India is much cheaper than in most Western countries. Thus, India has become a medical tourism destination.

Best Hospitals in India for Laryngectomy (Voice Box Surgery)

India has some of the best hospitals that perform Laryngectomy surgery. For patients looking for quality treatment, some of the top hospitals in Delhi are:

  • Metro Hospital, Faridabad
  • Medanta: The Medicity
  • Fortis Escorts Heart Institute
  • Max Super Speciality Hospital
  • Apollo Hospital

These hospitals provide state-of-the-art facilities, expert surgeons, and advanced treatment options for Laryngectomy.

Risks and Complications

Although laryngectomy is a life-saving procedure, it does pose some risks and complications, including:

  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a potential for an infection to develop at the site of the incision.
  • Bleeding: The surgery involves many major blood vessels, and significant bleeding can be a concern.
  • Difficulty in speaking: The ability to speak cannot be lost as treatment options exist.
  • Difficulty in swallowing: It might be that a patient can face difficulty swallowing post-surgery.
  • Changes in Breathing: It may need a tracheostomy, where one has to have lifelong care and management for this.

Recovery

Recovery after Laryngectomy needs time and patience. In the hospital, patients require 5-7 days to recover from it, and at home, caregivers say recovery takes some weeks. However, caregivers can provide speech therapy at home in such a scenario, and it is important as it would help the patient regain some capacity. Swallowing and breathing exercises are equally crucial for getting a normal functional aspect.

Healthcare professionals encourage patients to stop smoking and maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid complications and enhance healing.
